Domesday Book Project

From LMNLWiki

The Domesday Book Project is in the process of using LMNL concepts to semantically encode information about an English translation of Domesday Book, linked to specific paragraphs on facsimiles of the original and indexes of personal and place names. Domesday Book is one of the most important historical documents in English history, in which the first mention of almost all English places is to be found. The original still resides at the UK National Archives and there is also an online version [1].

The Domesday Book Project itself is not associated with the National Archives. It represents the latest stage of over 30 years of collaboration by academics and programmers. Domesday Explorer, the first released product, was published in 2000 to critical acclaim in the Domesday community. To no small extent, the success of the project relied on the extensive semantic markup of the text, coupled with a search engine that could make use of it.

Mark-up on this document, other sources and associated commentary naturally involves multiple overlapping ranges of text. LMNL has many similarities with the approach of Domesday Explorer, but is placing the concepts on a solid practical and theoretical foundation.
